Here is the chocolate/plum brocade I’m using as the lining for my princess seam coat. I don’t know if the brocade has an official up or down, so I’m putting it out to the wisdom of the Internet sewing community…Heart or spade?

I think it depends on what you like best!
I’d go with the lower of the two pictures - but why not try a picture of it draped over you to see if that makes a difference?
What a deliciously fantastic lining! I don’t think it will matter which way is up. If it were your fashion fabric I would agree with draping it over yourself and deciding whether the eye is carried up or down, and which of those you prefer.
This is a traditional pattern that would be found in a wallcovering or furniture upholstery placed in the 2nd picture orientation, the one you have labelled “heart”
